She frowns as he opens the door until the rain and wind cover his face and slide down his collar, then her face softens.
Her eyes rose and met his. She smiled. He felt something shift inside him.
She turns, catches him watching, smiles wide, and slips her arms around him.
Derick pulled the door closed, leaving the din of argument behind him, and went and sat on the bed.
From the other room, he can hear Ruthie sobbing.
“We have a window of about four months,” Ruthie says. “After that, the drugs will start to damage my ovaries.”
The dining room table looks like a scene from a post-apocalyptic children’s movie.
The phone rings at five a.m., exactly. Derick answers, eyes still closed as he nods at Ruthie’s form watching from the bed.
Before she even realizes she’s pregnant, Ruthie begins having terrible dreams.
