The Hawk, the Eagle, and the Rabbit – Part XVIII
Feb 22nd, 2010 | By Tom Sheehan | Category: Fables Fairy Tales and Folklore, Series | 378 viewsThe argument took place in front of the whole forest crowd, the hawk and the eagle exclaiming their talons were the sharpest in the world, the quickest and could hold more in one grasp than any other pair of talons, or the clutch of any animal in the forest.
“It’s so easy to prove,” each one said in turn.
And perhaps no one was listening to the braggarts.
“Who is to be the judge?” said the big white rabbit, chief of the largest warren in the forest. “The judge must be a leader, be a stick-out with his community viewpoints, and be above all in his character traits, like humility, honesty, perseverance, and all such traits.
“Fat chance we’d find anyone like that here,” said the hawk.
“For once in my life, I agree with Mr. Hawk,” the eagle said. “We might as well argue at the moon or the morning star.”
“Oh, I don’t know about all that,” said the rabbit. “We have some pretty good stand-up characters right here in our midst. We could find one easily. We must have pride and continuance in our community and not be at a loss in such a predicament.
“Would you volunteer for the task?” the eagle said.
“Of course,” the rabbit said, stepping forward, “not a chance that I’d give up on the whole community.”
In one swipe of their talons the hawk and the eagle each snatched a good chunk of the rabbit before a breath could be taken by the rabbit and were high overhead and going in different directions.
Boasting, at times, may get you everywhere.
