From the diary of Penelope Halwind:
4th of July
“Summer dreams, ripped at the seams. But, oh, those summer nights!” Grease
Joker got out of the cab. It was good to be back at the hideout and not in Arkham. He was feeling SO good he decided not to kill the cabby after all. He started to walk away and heard the cabby make a noise like he was going to insist on getting paid. Joker just turned around and smiled and the cabby screeched the tires in his hurry to get away.
All Joker wanted to do once he got inside was crash on his bed until he was good and ready to wake up. When he got to his room, however, he found the girl in his bed. She had on a modest shorts-and-top pajama set and was hugging a stuffed hyena. He made a face at the disgustingly innocent scene. Then he smiled. ‘We can’t have this.’ He leaned over and stroked her hair a couple of times until she woke up and smiled. Then he yanked.
Nightshade finished his rounds and stopped at Penelope’s penthouse to leave her a heads up about Joker. He stepped inside and looked at the Monet art print above her mantle. She had other art in the apartment too and he had to admit she had good taste. He made his way to the dining area but stopped as he heard a door open down the hallway. He ducked into the shadows.
Stanley walked to the refrigerator. It was hot out tonight and he got himself a bottled water. As he took a drink he thought about turning on Penelope’s, no, it was his too, air conditioner. Penelope called him from the bedroom and he asked her if she wanted a water too. She said yes so he grabbed another one and went back. After a couple of minutes he returned and locked the window before turning on the air.
‘So that’s where The Question moved to.’ Nightshade shook his head as he watched him lock the window. He smiled. ‘Someone for everyone.’ Speaking of which, there was one more stop he wanted to make….
Nightshade quietly entered the apartment and made his way down the hall without waking any of the cats. Selina was asleep in front of a fan. ‘If only she liked Bruce as well. If only she’d stop stealing. If only…’ one of the cats on the bed was looking at him and Selina began to stir.
Selina woke from a pleasant dream to the familiar tingle of knowing Nightshade was around. She noticed one of the cats looking at something but by the time she turned over whatever (or WHOever?) it was was gone.
