Pre-Arranged Citizenship

Rana and I were supposed to get married the next weekend. I didn’t have the nerve to tell Margo it was off, I wasn’t into her pre-arranged wedding stuff, until she took me to a class on self-assertion. It was a six week class. I went twice.

”Here she is! One week to go!” Margo said, parading Rana.

Penelope was nearby in Dave’s Lazyboy. She sat up when she heard Margo.

”You, getting married?”

Before I could answer, Kenny ‘Bocephus’ Atkins, came into the store. It was the first time I was actually happy to see that birddog.

”What you got there, Margo?” Kenny asked.

This time it wasn’t giggles. It was laughter from Rana. The laughter of a woman. In love.

”Kenny, this is Rana, Abdul’s sister,” Margo said. “She and Wilbur are getting married next weekend.”

Not so fast, I wanted to tell her. I took the self assertive class, but I still couldn’t tell her.

”Pardon me, miss. Married to him?” He pointed his finger at me. “But he’s a non-employee from what I hear. I was just heading down to the ice cream shop, making my rounds you know, to check on Big Charlotte. Maybe,” he began to stutter, “Rana’d like to join me for an ice cream cone?”

Rana’s eyes sparkled. The lights reflected off all the golden buttons and tassels on his uniform. Kenny led Rana to the ice cream shop with red chairs and heart-shaped backs. The next weekend she was a citizen.
