Before A Breath Can Be Taken (one must be let out)
Dec 16th, 2009 | By R Jay Slais | Category: Poetry | 628 viewsOne week after she got pregnant,
she wishes for the abortion
her Catholic upbringing would not allow.
She passes the clinic every day
on her way to the liquor store.
She could not stop.
Guns fire bullets, cigarettes smoke,
lies beget lies, the sky sometimes falls:
each day breaks with a silent regret.
Peaceful dreams are shattered
in the night by the reality of life.
The nightmares will not stop.
At nine months to the day,
his time has come to enter;
the anticipation of one’s birthday.
Entering the dark tunnel,
there is no turning back
at the end, a bright light.
The sickly cord wrapped
around his neck, heart rate slows,
then stops. The only thing to do
is hold your breath.
