Fall

Sep 17th, 2009 | By Denise Hudson | Category: Poetry | 416 views

I tend to fall in love
no less than twice a week
with strangers
– and half become my enemies
– and half become my brothers

The little lights inside their eyes …
The warmth of skin that I can feel
inside five paces
One with curly rumpled hair
and a disarming smile …
Another one a poet singing whispered words into
my hypothetical shivering ear
And each becomes for that small space
the love of my life
blended into myriad faces

I can’t help it –
liking men, women, mothers, fathers
loaves of bread …
I can’t help falling
in love with the chair
or the lock of hair,
the disorganized curls
on the nape of your neck

The significance
of a passing look across
as the music swells –
It helps me to make the small decisions;
whether or not to enter
small or fast or languidly …
or to decide bigly
that I’m going to go on
loving – at random –
into the next day’s week
