Playing Marbles With God

Jun 19th, 2009 | By Joseph Meckes | Category: Poetry | 362 views

At times I ponder how life seems so odd
it’s like playing a game of marbles with God.
The players are all of the people I know
the marbles are virtues we all should show.

God scatters the marbles around in the dust
but the devil adds marbles of sin and lust.
We pick and choose, with our shooters take aim
as all of us play this soul searching game.

The devil’s marbles are shiny and new
compared to the marbles of honest virtue.
The sinful marbles are easy to win
you just have to know how to use a backspin.

Those shiny new marbles look good in your bag
each of those marbles, so easy to snag.
God’s marbles seem so much harder to play
so throughout the game in the circle they stay.

But soon the game will come to an end
on what we have won, our fate will depend.
When showing the Lord our treasures to claim
they must be the marbles without any shame.

Chastity, Diligence, Patience and more
Liberality always, with Kindness galore.
Abstinence and Humility must shine in our soul
so we can be named on that heavenly scroll.

The marbles of virtues are the marbles we seek
the marbles of sin will be won by the weak.
At times I ponder how life seems so odd
we’re playing a game of marbles with God.

About Joe:
I've always loved poetry, not all poetry, but the stuff that makes you laugh or cry. I've been writing poetry for family and friends since college but have resisted pushing my poetic style to a public medium until now. I guess I'm a senior citizen since AARP has solicited my membership which I just haven't wanted to accept yet. I am busy with my career as a manufacturing software consultant, spending time with my wife of 34+ years, involved with our two daughter's lives, and my grandsons. Oh those grandsons! I've been blessed in many ways but most of all with health and family. I'm a world traveler and have been dumb struck many times by the beauty of God's world and the complexities of his creation. I hope you enjoy my poetry. Please feel free to contact me; I enjoy the interaction with other creative writers.
