G Grandpa’s Remembrance

Feb 14th, 2010 | By Joseph Meckes | Category: Poetry | 1093 views

The family gathered all around
to say their last good-bye
and Grandpa held back the tears
he didn’t want to cry.

His step was slow and so unsure
his eyes were red from tears
as Grandpa walked the funeral aisle
he set aside his fears.

For fifty years she’d been there
standing by his side
never doubting that she loved him
since she became his bride

The memoirs lay everywhere
pictures old and new
scattered glimpses of their lives
were known by just a few.

He promised her he’d be the man
that she knew he could be
he’d say a kind remembrance
a loving soliloquy.

Grandpa stood in front of all
staring in the air
and started reminiscing
as if no one was there.

“I’ve always loved you darling
from the day you said hello
but how much do I love you
now everyone will know.”

“You were my love for fifty years
I’ve treasured every minute
my life was heaven here on earth
because you were in it.”

“You were my rock to lean upon
when hard times put me down
with loving faith you held me up
when I felt like a clown.”

“Your smile was warm and genuine
your spirit calm and free
and I thanked God every day
that you had chosen me.”

“I will not cry, I will not grieve
you’ll always live in me
and soon I’ll join you
once again in God’s sweet revelry.”

Grandpa turned and smiled at me
his tears welt up inside
then trickled down a wrinkled cheek
his sadness wouldn’t hide.

A year had gone I got a call
that Grandpa passed away
and left a note for me to read
on his remembrance day.

The family got together
to honor my Grandpa
and listen to the final words
he said about Grandma.

“I’m with the one I truly love
my soul is now at peace
for God has made us one again
our love will never cease.”

About Joe:
I've always loved poetry, not all poetry, but the stuff that makes you laugh or cry. I've been writing poetry for family and friends since college but have resisted pushing my poetic style to a public medium until now. I guess I'm a senior citizen since AARP has solicited my membership which I just haven't wanted to accept yet. I am busy with my career as a manufacturing software consultant, spending time with my wife of 34+ years, involved with our two daughter's lives, and my grandsons. Oh those grandsons! I've been blessed in many ways but most of all with health and family. I'm a world traveler and have been dumb struck many times by the beauty of God's world and the complexities of his creation. I hope you enjoy my poetry. Please feel free to contact me; I enjoy the interaction with other creative writers.
