What They Don’t Know Won’t Hurt Them
Oct 8th, 2009 | By Julie M Tate | Category: Poetry | 752 viewsThese corner booths are perfect
for silent exhibition.
The hiss of your belt coming loose
does not frighten me—
no one can hear over the mandolin on stage.
My cold-blooded fingers seek and seize
like rattlesnakes to heat.
Your hand trembles
around a sweating martini glass—
Careful not to shed its contents
as easily as you’ve spilled
into a cocktail napkin
now sitting in an overflowing ashtray.
The oblivious scurry off
into the waiting arms of sobriety.
We wait until last call while
you go limp in my embrace.
