Russian Tearoom
Aug 20th, 2009 | By Heather Ann Schmidt | Category: Poetry | 517 viewsI wandered down
State Street
hoping to get lost,
walking six blocks
until I found a department store
&
wandered inside,
found the stationer’s display–
its trays of
writing instruments, leather folios.
My hand ran along
the metal edge of the case
& I pointed
to the mother of pearl pen
in the center.
The saleslady removed it,
putting its smooth frame
in my left hand
& we went away
to explore abandoned marquis
& bookstores filled with James Wright,
Ginsberg.
Then early in the afternoon
after sketching the trees,
I saw a small Russian tearoom
& stopped in
to have tea from a samovar with black cherries
&
eavesdrop
as my pen whispered
to my notebook.
