Complicated

Jun 8th, 2009 | By Dianne Borsenik | Category: Poetry | 464 views

Are you wearing your life jacket, I wonder?
Something to preserve you, should
you fall out of your relationship,
over the side of love, and into the deep?

Are you prepared to navigate
those choppy seas of dialogue and action,
reaction and interpretation;
are you able to weave in and out
among the toothy sharks of hearsay
and gossip? Can you avoid
the glassy icebergs of fatigue,
familiarity, and sexist misunderstandings
that can sink a relationship
faster than anything?

Once you board this relationship,
there’s no turning back. Your ticket
is punched. You have to stay on,
however complicated it may be,
until you reach your destination.

You have to let the relationship
take you where it wants to go.

  1. What a perfect image… having a life jacket to help in love. We should hand them out to friends and relatives, to our children. and keep one on hand always for ourselves. I love the nautical imagery.
