Interview with Cinema 3956, Adam Klimek & Anthony Callis

Cinema 3956

Recently, I sat down with Adam Klimek and Anthony Callis to discuss their upcoming show, called Cinema 3956. Well, I didn’t actually sit down with them as they have been very busy preparing for the show, but I sat down and wrote out some questions for them, and they sat down and wrote some responses for me. I had been to a previous show of theirs, and was blown away by the incredible art on display. These are two, very unique Detroit Artists making an impact on the Detroit Art scene. Their work covers a wide range, from pop art to fine art, and even some incredibly decorated little dolls called Munny Dolls.

Carlton: So, tell me about this event. I want details. Where, when, what will the art work focus on? Is there a theme?

Adam:Cinema 3956 is having its next show at Cactus Jacks in Utica (Map). The show will run from about 12 noon until they close 2 AM on Saturday August 8th. The focus, to be honest with you, is very blurry. Anthony and I have a wide range of work. Mine, personally, for this show, will be a variety of things that have had an influence on me and inspired me in some way. Everything from video games and movies to Disney World and, of course, yetis.

Anthony: The event is at Cactus Jacks (link to map above) Saturday, August 8th from Noon until 2 AM. No cover charge, they will be providing some free food from 5 to 9, Cash Bar all day. The show is all ages until 9:00 PM and the 21 and up after that. The work to be displayed is very diverse, ranging from pop type art to fine art, illustration, sculpture, as well as munny dolls.

Carlton: Where did you come up with the name Cinema 356?

Anthony: The name came from an equation created by us. When anagrams with no combinations and birth years of various involved parties are used to create a transitive property the resulting solution can be used as a header in all situations relating to it.

Carlton: Adam, how would you characterize your work?

Adam: Good question. My mind is all over the place when it comes to creating something. One word to discribe my work would be “Odd”.  I love movies, video games, cartoons, scary things, yeti’s, Egyptian and Greek mythology, retro stuff, music, and the list goes on but these are a few things  that frequent my art work.  I find my attention span is getting shorter and shorter as I get older. I want to combine all of the things I listed as quickly as possible in some expression of art, but also I want that piece of art to look as if it was found with no real date of origin or location.

Anthony: Varied. I use a lot of different styles and like to create work that ranges from one end to the other. I like to do this so there is something for everyone to enjoy, since everybody has different types of art that they find appealing.

Carlton: Adam, tell us about your background. Who is Adam Klimek?

Adam: I grew up watching cartoons and reading comics and trying to duplicate what I saw drawing and coloring late into the night. I had a great childhood and a very supportive family. Later went on to  graduate from CCS with a bachelors in Graphic Communication and Illustration. Sometimes I feel like I was born in the wrong time because I love retro styled clothing, cars and home furnishings so much. That was a random fact to end this topic about me.

Carlton: Anthony, how about you? Tell us about your background as well.

Anthony: I have been doing art since I was about 7 years old. And its kind of grown from there. I met Adam while attending CCS. I’m not much of a autobiographer.

Carlton: Do either of you have anyplace our readers can go to see your work outside of this show? Web pages? Galleries?

Anthony: Our work has recently been on display at Lift Gallery in Royal Oak, McSorely’s in Mt Clemens, and the Andrea Springer Gallery at the Russell Street in Detroit. Our most recent project before this new show was a collaborative show we did called Happenings. You can see more of my work at MySpace and Cinema 3956 at MySpace as well.

Adam: As Anthony stated gallery’s that have supported our work are McSorley’s, Happenings held at Andrea Springer Studio, Lift in Royal Oak, and now Cactus Jacks. Check out www.yetistyle.com and YouTube to see my work and videos.

Carlton: What other arts are either of you interested in besides painting?

Anthony: Sculpture, Illustration, Film, and multimedia work.

Adam: I love everything. Digital media, video work, photography and pretty much anything creative.

Carlton: Is there anything either of you want to say to our readers about the show? About life? The answer to the Great Question, as expressed by Douglas Adams in Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy?

Anthony: Regarding the show: Please come and check it out. Regarding Life: My signature looks so different from time to time. Not sure why, it just happens. Regarding the great question: I believe the answer to that is “YUP!”

Adam: Too bad I didn’t say “Great question” to Question 3 because then I would have answered with out even knowing that I was answering the Great Question! Man, Can I change my answer to number 3 now? I’m still trying to figure out Anthony’s answer to number 2!

Carlton: Thank you both for your time. I look forward to attending the show and I wish you both the best.

So, there you have it, straight from the mouths of Cinema 3956. As I said, I’ve been to an earlier show of theirs and they have some truly incredible work on display. Besides, haven’t you been lately saying to yourself, “I need to get more culture in my life. See some new things. Meet some new people.” Well, here is your chance. You will surely not be disappointed.
